The Installation & Maintenance Electrician Apprenticeship has been recognised as a gold standard for green skills by the UK government. The scheme is one of six apprenticeships selected for its sustainability credentials and its potential to contribute to the transition to a net zero economy. The government-funded apprenticeship is designed to equip electrical apprentices with the skills to install low carbon technologies, with the qualification including training in the installation and connection of electric vehicle charging points and solar PV. The electrotechnical industry has been working to develop formal green skills training routes in recent years, with many low and zero carbon technologies rooted in the core competencies of an electrician. Existing electricians can also upskill in these technologies, including EV charging points and solar PV installation. The official King’s Coronation emblem is being issued to promote the electrotechnical apprenticeship in recognition of the industry’s contribution to sustainability and renewable energy. The objective is to encourage more electrical contractors to take on apprentices and support the growth of a greener economy, said Jamie Bryan, head of lecturing at Clarkson Evans. Ruth Devine, managing director of SJD Electrical and chair of the Technical Education Solutions Providers Group, added that the regal symbol reflects the importance of electrotechnical careers in delivering a green and energy-efficient future.
