The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) has partnered with a digital services company, Infosys, to create a unique mobile application called Carbon Tracker. This app allows professional tennis players to track and reduce their travel emissions while participating in tournaments. With players traveling to over 250 events in 50 different countries each season, travel represents a significant portion of their overall carbon emissions.
Carbon Tracker is the first-of-its-kind application in professional sports and aligns with ATP’s commitment to UN Sports for Climate Action. It aims to address the impact of traveling, which has become the top sustainability priority for ATP Serves. The app allows players to track their travel to tournaments, understand their emissions profile, and make more conscious travel decisions.
Furthermore, the app enables players to mitigate their carbon footprint by purchasing verified carbon credits through Gold Standard, a sustainable development standard and climate action partner of ATP. This feature allows players to contribute to carbon reduction projects to offset their emissions.
The long-term goal of the Carbon Tracker app is to inspire greener travel within the ATP Tour. It offers a dashboard that provides players with a comprehensive view of their emissions over multiple seasons. This allows them to gain a deeper understanding of their travel choices and make more informed decisions.
ATP CEO Massimo Calvelli emphasized the importance of addressing the tennis industry’s travel footprint and praised the innovation behind the Carbon Tracker app. The potential impact of the application is significant, and ATP is excited to continue developing it.
To incentivize players to engage with the app, Carbon Tracker includes a leaderboard where the top three players at the end of the 2023 season will be eligible to win a prize pool of US$100,000. This prize money will be donated to environmental sustainability charities chosen by the winning players.
Overall, the ATP’s collaboration with Infosys to create Carbon Tracker is a significant step towards reducing travel emissions in the tennis industry. By providing players with the tools and knowledge to make greener travel choices, the app aims to contribute to a more sustainable future for professional tennis.
