The Tanzanian government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Singapore’s GreenCop Development to create Africa’s largest carbon offset project. GreenCop will pay $3.6m upfront to carry out conservation activities before a voluntary carbon offset project intended to stop greenhouse gas emissions and sequester carbon begins in the Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania. Tanzania’s Wildlife Management Authority and GreenCop share a vision to achieve long-term financial viability of the Selous, Msanjesi and Kilombero game reserves through the MoU. The project, which covers 2.4 million hectares, also aims to promote economic development and help local communities.
