The release of the new Specialized Tarmac SL8 has generated a lot of excitement among cycling enthusiasts. Specialized has focused on improving aerodynamics, reducing weight, and enhancing ride quality in this new model. The goal was to create a fast bike without sacrificing comfort or performance.

The SL8 is influenced by the ultra-lightweight Atheos and the ultra-aerodynamic Venge, making it the most aero road bike and the lightest on the WorldTour. Specialized claims a 33% improvement on stiffness-to-weight ratio, which should improve ride feel. The SL8 retains the same geometry as the SL7, which is good news for Tarmac fans.

During a test ride near Specialized’s UK headquarters, the SL8 impressed with its comfortable fit and balanced geometry. The integrated Rapide cockpit provided a secure grip and a clean look. The bike’s design incorporates hidden cables, giving it a neat appearance. Specialized also addressed the issue of a firm ride by making the SL8 more compliant and comfortable on rough roads.

The SL8 is responsive to accelerations and feels snappy on climbs, thanks to its stiff front and reduced weight at the rear. The wider tyres and Roval Rapide wheels contribute to a comfortable and quick ride on any terrain. The SL8 also performs well in corners, with responsive handling and no twitchiness.

Overall, the reviewer struggled to find any negatives about the SL8. Its durability and maintenance requirements were not assessed during the test ride. However, the bike impressed with its performance and advanced features. Even though it falls into the premium price range, Specialized has reduced the price compared to the previous model.

The SL8 is a versatile all-rounder that can serve as one bike for various purposes. It is a strong contender against other bikes, with its superior aerodynamics, lightweight design, and overall performance. Specialized has once again delivered a winning product with the Tarmac SL8.
