NGK Spark Plug Co., Ltd. (President: Takeshi Kawai, Headquarters: Higashi-ku, Nagoya) is pleased to announce that the NGK SPARK PLUG Group’sGreen House Gas reduction targets has been approved as ‘Science-based targets’ from the Science Based Targets initiative (hereinafter ‘SBTi’).

Science-based targets are emissions reduction targets in line with what the latest climate science says is needed to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement – to limit global warming to well-below 2-degreeC above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5-degreeC.

The SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting and independently assesses companies’ targets.

NGK SPARK PLUG Group has set targets of a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions (compared to FY 2018) by FY 2030, based on the premise that we aim to be carbon neutral by 2050 in our Long-Term Management Plan and Eco Vision 2030. And now, we have had its emissions reduction targets approved by the SBTi as consistent with levels required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

NGK SPARK PLUG Group’s GHG reduction targets

-CO2 emissions (Scope 1 and 2): 30% reduction in FY2030 (compared to FY2018) [SBT Certification]

-CO2 emissions (Scope 3): 30% reduction in FY2030 (compared to FY2018) [SBT Certification]

*Scope 1: Direct emissions from fuel use

*Scope 2: Indirect emissions from the use of electricity and heat purchased from external sources.

*Scope 3: Indirect emissions other than Scope 1 and 2 (raw material procurement, transportation, use, disposal, etc.)

NGK SPARK PLUG Group, as a globally expanding manufacturing company, promotes environmental conservation activities integrated with management with the participation of all members, aiming to achieve both corporate growth and corporate growth in order to contribute to the construction of a sustainable society.
