Bridgestone, a leading tyre manufacturer, has announced that it will be supplying teams at the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge (BWSC) with tyres developed using 63% recycled and renewable materials. The BWSC is a 3,000-kilometre race across Australia, and the custom-designed tyres are meant to meet the unique challenges of the event.
Bridgestone has always supported safety in motorsport and has a strong commitment to the evolution of technology and talent development. The company is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its motorsport activities in 2023 and aims to support sustainable global motorsport.
The new tyres for the 2023 BWSC feature Enliten, Bridgestone’s new base technology for product design. Enliten enhances environmental performance while also exceeding customer and market demands in terms of product performance. The tyres are designed to meet the extreme demands of the race, including low rolling resistance, wear, and weight.
The tyres will include a tyre with a recycled and renewable material ratio of 63%, an improvement compared to the 2019 BWSC event. The recycled and renewable materials used include recycled organic fibre, recovered carbon black, recycled rubber chemical, recycled oil, and reinforcement material using recycled steel. Additionally, the tyres supplied to the cruiser class are developed using rice husk silica and carbon black recovered through pyrolysis of used tyres.
For the tyre shipment to the BWSC, Bridgestone has chosen to work with DHL, a leading logistics provider that aims to achieve zero emissions by 2050. Through DHL’s GoGreen Plus solution, the tyre shipment will be a 100% carbon-neutral shipment, using sustainable marine fuel and compensating for emissions via carbon credits.
Bridgestone is passionate about contributing to a more sustainable motorsport future and will demonstrate the capabilities of the new Enliten tyres in the extreme conditions of the BWSC. The company also aims to support young and diverse engineering minds from around the world in creating breakthrough technologies for a more sustainable mobility society.
The BWSC plays a unique role in Bridgestone’s journey towards sustainability, showcasing the values of the company’s commitment to a carbon-neutral mobility society and inspiring excitement and joy in the world of mobility.
