Dutch company Fairphone has launched its latest model, the Fairphone 5, which it claims is its most sustainable phone yet. The phone features an exclusive Qualcomm chipset that allows the company to offer eight years of software support and five years of operating system updates. The chipset, along with the company’s industry-leading support service, will ensure that the phone receives updates until 2031. Users also have the option to choose an alternative version of Android, such as e/OS developed by Murena.
In terms of sustainability, over 70% of the materials used in the Fairphone 5 are recycled or fairly obtained, a significant improvement compared to previous models. The assembly process has also been transitioned to use renewable energy, and Fairphone commits to recycling an old device for every new device sold in order to reduce e-waste. The company takes responsibility for its carbon footprint and offsets any remaining emissions by investing in carbon reduction projects.
Fairphone also emphasizes the fair treatment and fair wages of workers involved in the production of the phone, including those in the company’s supply chain. Each Fairphone 5 directly supports workers with a salary bonus of $2.63, contributing to a world where manufacturers are treated fairly and earn living wages.
In terms of specifications, the Fairphone 5 boasts a 6.46-inch OLED screen with a 90 Hz refresh rate, 8 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of expandable internal memory. It has three 50 MP rear cameras, a 50 MP selfie camera, and a removable 4200 mAh battery with 30W fast charging support. The phone is priced at EUR 699.00 and is currently in the pre-sale phase, with delivery starting on September 14 in most European markets.
