Twenty three beaches in Devon and Cornwall have been awarded the Blue Flag award for 2023 by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. The designation is conferred on well-managed beaches that have high levels of water quality and offer environmental education programmes. A total of 77 beaches across the UK received the award this year. Oddicombe beach in Torbay has scooped the award every year since it was launched 36 years ago. Westward Ho is another beach in Devon that has won the award for over 20 consecutive years. Summerleaze beach in Cornwall and Beer beach in East Devon were first-time Blue Flag winners this year. To qualify for the Blue Flag award, beaches must satisfy standards in four categories with 33 individual targets covering environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management, and safety and services. Blue Flag beaches are also required to run at least five educational activities per year that encourage environmental awareness. According to Allison Ogden-Newton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, Blue Flag beaches are “clean, safe and meet the highest environmental standards, as well as international bathing water quality standards”.
