BC Hydro is helping to make the film and television industry in British Columbia the greenest in North America by supporting the electrification of production sets. Diesel generators are traditionally used to power film sets worldwide, but they contribute to carbon emissions, noise pollution, and poor air quality. BC Hydro is working with communities across the Lower Mainland to introduce clean power kiosks, and one studio, Martini Film Studios, is leading the way in sustainability.
Martini Studios’ “Martini Town,” a 16-acre backlot set, used to rely on four diesel generators emitting up to one ton of carbon each per day. However, with funding from CleanBC and BC Hydro’s Low Carbon Electrification Program, Martini Film Studios replaced the generators with film kiosks powered by BC Hydro’s 98% renewable electricity. This move has made all Martini Studios properties diesel-generator-free zones.
In addition to adopting clean power, Martini Film Studios has implemented other energy-efficient measures, such as motion-activated LED lighting, zoned heating and cooling, insulated soundstages, water-efficient fixtures, and waste diversion. The studio also has 22 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and solar panels, making it a net-zero carbon studio.
Martini Studios plans to further expand its operations with sustainability in mind. They aim to make the expansion carbon net zero by using renewable electricity and increasing the number of EV charging units on-site to 80. The company currently owns and operates five EVs and has already used 20 EVs for a recent production.
BC Hydro has recognized Martini Studios as a Clean Energy Champion for its commitment to sustainability. The energy company is accepting nominations for individuals, businesses, municipalities, and community groups in British Columbia that have taken steps to lower their carbon footprint and adopt clean energy technologies.
By supporting the film industry in transitioning to clean electricity, BC Hydro is helping to reduce emissions and create a more sustainable future. Martini Film Studios’ efforts demonstrate the industry’s commitment to sustainability and showcase how clean power can be successfully integrated into production sets.
