President Emmanuel Macron’s call for a “European regulatory pause” on environmental standards has caused an outcry among environmentalists and raised questions in Brussels. However, on Saturday, France’s Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, reassured that “there is no pause whatsoever in France’s climate ambition.” Macron had stated twice on Thursday and Friday that Europe should stop producing new environmental norms after the application of the European Union’s Green Deal and called for “stability” on the matter. Borne stated that the legislation was ambitious and would enable France to reach its objectives, but it was unnecessary to add more standards. Greens, activists, and officials criticised Macron’s comments. The Green Deal is the EU’s crucial set of texts on climate, most of which have been adopted, but some are still under difficult negotiations.
