During the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, Gabon’s Minister of Water and Forests, Lee White, expressed frustration at the lack of recognition afforded Gabon for its policy of zero deforestation and carbon sequestration potential. The meetings, held in Washington D.C., USA, discussed the institutions’ role in combating climate change and financing adaptation and mitigation. White, who attended the meetings, had previously raised the issue at the One Forest Summit in Libreville, Gabon, in March 2023, but noted that developed countries have yet to reward Gabon for its efforts. Gabon boasts a near-zero deforestation rate, and absorbs large amounts of carbon, thus becoming one of the world’s most carbon-absorbing countries. In response, Gabonese authorities have advocated for sovereign and voluntary carbon markets to be better aligned, and have called for improved sovereign market rating agencies. White’s call follows data revealing that carbon prices reached a record high in January 2023, surpassing 140 euros, as markets look to incentivize firms to reduce their emissions.
