Wind-powered shipping is on the rise, with French firms accounting for 11 of the 31 pioneering companies in this sector, according to a report from an agency backed by the local authorities of Nantes and Saint-Nazaire (NSN). The study, conducted with Windship and Avisa Partners, highlights French predominance in the field and NSN Vice-President Frank Trichet described his region as a “pioneer globally”. Producers of the upcoming Neoliner, the Canopée, the Grain de Sail II, and Silenseas’ Orient Express, all use wind power, while the 11 companies behind them create 43% of French maritime jobs. French Vice-President of the Pays de la Loire region, Claire Hugues, describes the region as having a “unique, world-leading sector” in wind-powered shipping. Some 23% of these jobs are based in neighbouring Brittany.
